Teach and Code Socials November 2024
LHCb's software training programme
The Teach and Code Socials are termly social and informal seminars organised by ARC Education and in collaboration with the UCL community and beyond.
The aim is to build community, and share knowledge and learning in teaching digital research skills.
Our speaker for this event is: Mark Smith, from the Imperial LHCb group.
A hybrid event with refreshments provided for those attending on campus.
Talk(s) will start at 4:15pm followed by networking.
Speaker bio:
Mark has been a postdoc in the Imperial LHCb group since 2016. Previously he completed his PhD at the University of Manchester, also as part of the LHCb collaboration. His primary interests are rare electroweak penguin decays and semileptonic B decays. For the latter area he convened the corresponding LHCb physics WG between 2020 and 2022. He is currently coordinating the efforts for the development and maintenance of the LHCb offline analysis software for LHC Run 3 and beyond. He also continues to develop the distributed computing job submission tool Ganga, used within LHCb and in collaborations world-wide.
Abstract:
LHCb is a collaboration of ~1700 scientists from over 100 institutes around the world. In Run 3 of the LHC, the LHCb experiment expects to save 15Pb of data per year. Subsequently this data is processed and made usable for individuals to carry out physics analyses. I will present the structure of the software used to carry out the offline data processing. In particular I will note the people who are making the contributions to its development and maintenance and discuss the difficulties of encouraging contributions from a wider pool of users. Finally, I will discuss LHCb's software training programme and how we are trying to get more collaborators involved in the activity of writing and developing the central code for the experiment.
