Teach and Code Socials Nov 2025
The Teach and Code Socials are termly social and informal seminars organised by ARC Education in collaboration with the UCL community and beyond.
Teach and Code Socials aim to build community, and share knowledge and learning in teaching digital research skills.
This is a hybrid event with refreshments provided for those attending on campus.
Talk(s) will start at 3:15pm followed by networking.
Talk 1: Teaching Programming Across Disciplines
Speakers: University of Edinburgh
We are writing an open-source book about teaching programming to non-programmers (i.e. students outside of informatics). Over 30 groups of authors are collaborating on short chapters, which allows us to take a more personal perspective. The project started at the University of Edinburgh but now authors come from 30+ academic institutions – universities, colleges, and industry.
Chapters include case studies, examples of good practice, reflection pieces, and lesson ideas. We write about things that we encounter (methods, curriculum, groupwork, diversity) and many chapters describe topics close to our hearts: pair programming; assessment and feedback; genAI; inclusivity and accessibility.
Join the team of an existing chapter, or suggest your own: https://pairprogramming.ed.ac.uk/join-book/
Talk 2: Reviewing computing pedagogies through an inclusivity lens.
Speakers: Samantha Ahern - ARC Education co-lead, UCL and Rebecca Colquhon - Teaching Fellow in Geophysics and Quantitative Geoscience, Imperial
In this talk we will explore common approaches to computing education delivery and the inclusivity implications for a diverse range of learners. What could help or hinder their engagement? How can a UDL lens enhance the experience for all?
