Climate change education through cultural heritage

Cultural heritage can be a powerful resource for teaching about climate change. From historical records and heritage objects to digital archives, these materials offer unique ways to explore environmental change, human adaptation, and civic responsibility.

This April, the Europeana Education Community, in collaboration with the Climate Action Community, is hosting a panel for educators, GLAM professionals, and climate advocates. The webinar will explore how cultural heritage can help learners connect with climate issues not just as abstract science, but as tangible, relatable challenges. Participants will also explore ways to inform and inspire learners about future possibilities for adaptation and action.

The panel will take place on 8 April 2026, and will feature inspiring projects and practical approaches that connect cultural heritage to climate education.

Contributors include:

  • Pier Giacomo Sola (Michael Culture) will discuss participatory projects that place heritage, arts, and the creative sectors at the heart of climate action.
  • Ping Kong (Founder/CEO of Heritage & Education gGmbH and Secretary-General of ICOMOS ISC Water and Heritage: https://water.icomos.org/), who will present the e-learning modules on World Heritage and Climate Protection, developed in partnership with UNESCO and funded by Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt, highlighting youth engagement as climate-ready citizens and active stewards of our shared heritage.
  • Carlo De Gaetano (Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences) will share Tides of Heritage, a Cultural Game Jam where students explored the impacts of rising sea levels on European values through audiovisual heritage.
  • Brigitte Vézina (Creative Commons) will highlight the potential of equitable access to heritage for education, and show how open heritage is part of the shared infrastructure for research and interdisciplinary education, including science and climate education, helping turn centuries of heritage into insight for a sustainable future.

This webinar offers educators and heritage professionals a unique opportunity to discover creative approaches to climate education.
