Cultural Heritage and Digital Citizenship Education

In an age of digital transformation, how can cultural heritage institutions raise awareness of digital citizenship and strengthen democratic values? As online spaces become increasingly fraught with misinformation and biased narratives, teaching media literacy is more essential than ever. It could be argued that cultural heritage—particularly in its digital form—offers a powerful avenue for fostering critical engagement with historical and contemporary media.

This webinar will explore the intersection of cultural heritage and digital citizenship education, highlighting how archives, museum collections, and digital storytelling can equip citizens, particularly young people, with the skills to engage with the digital world critically, safely, constructively, and responsibly. We will discuss the role of the GLAM sector in helping audiences analyze primary sources, question narratives, and build resilience against misinformation.

This session will feature a discussion led by Marco Streefkerk (Anne Frank House) and Raul Gomez (UCM) along with presentations from Noelle Beerepoot (Anne Frank House), Sandra Rientjes (Wikimedia Nederland), Koos Sikkema (Bronnen in de Klas) and Christine Hveding (Europeana). Together, we will explore possibilities of how archives, museums, and educational initiatives can equip citizens, especially young people, to strengthen media literacy skills, critical thinking, and democratic participation across Europe.

Active participation in the final discussion by the audience is highly encouraged.
