Het DE-BIAS-project focust op het detecteren en contextualiseren van het gebruik van schadelijke taal in culturele erfgoedcollecties geaggregeerd in Europeana.eu. Daarnaast ondersteunt DE-BIAS erfgoedprofessionals bij het aanpakken van bias in hun eigen collecties. Dit webinar, gericht op de Lage Landse erfgoedsector en met het Nederlands als voertaal, wil het bewustzijn vergroten van mogelijke vooroordelen in erfgoedcollecties uit het koloniale verleden, nagaan hoe er kan worden samengewerkt met de erfgoedgemeenschappen die worden getroffen door bias, en relevante use cases tegen het licht houden. Het KU Leuven-team zal zijn werk in DE-BIAS toelichten, maar deelnemers worden ook uitgenodigd om hun eigen use cases en ervaringen te delen. De groep zal bespreken hoe schadelijke taal in metadata kan worden geanalyseerd, beoordeeld en aangepakt, evenals hoe bias kan worden voorkomen bij het maken van nieuwe beschrijvingen. Deelnemers zullen ook inzicht verwerven in de mogelijkheden en uitdagingen van community work.

De-biasing cultural heritage collections on colonial past

The DE-BIAS project is dedicated to detecting and contextualising the use of harmful language in cultural heritage collections aggregated in Europeana.eu, while supporting cultural heritage professionals to address bias in their own collections. This webinar, targeted to the cultural heritage sector of the Lage Landse, will be held in Dutch. Its objectives are to raise awareness of potential biases in cultural heritage collections connected with the colonial past, to present the outcomes from working on mitigation strategies with communities affected by the bias, and to discuss relevant use cases. The organisers will present their work in DE-BIAS, but participants are invited to bring their own use cases and experiences as well. Together, the group will discuss how harmful language in metadata could be analysed, assessed and addressed, as well as how to prevent bias when creating new descriptions. Participants will also gain a better understanding of the opportunities and challenges of community work.
