Art Laboratory Berlin welcomes you to participate in the HACK THE PANKE Festival with various events like workshops, film screenings and walks on art, science and sound in Berlin-Wedding.
Discovered originally by J. and P. Curie using single crystals in 1880, and perfected by Paul Langevin for underwater applications using quartz- a piezoelectric crystal, much of the improvements, research and implementation of piezo-electricity and hydrophones has been done by and for military use. In this technical workshop, we reclaim this topic for the public domain, thinking critically of the development of these tools and their subsequent outcome. When collecting data, we are extracting from and entering a watery eco-system of non-human life and organisms. By fostering our relations to the act of sound extraction through im/permanence, how can we imagine less or non-invasive ways to observe sound and vibrations from water environments. Considering this, we will explore designs of new bodies for hydrophones, questioning their purpose through its functionality. Throughout this process, we will engage with alternate tools of extraction for becoming, while experimenting with different methods and materials used to construct piezo-hydrophones.
Cammack Lindsey is an artist whose practice includes BioArt DIY techniques and political musical theater, expanding this space to redistribute stolen futures through performances and installations, they work together with code, voice, sound, & the materialization of magic, ghosts, and clouds. Based in Berlin, they produced their first 8-hour musical with M.I/mi1glissé at Acker Stadt Palast in May 2017 and in 2019, premiered their most recent musical composition ‘ ∫ ( { } )_ visible window’, releasing the recording online with the label Quantum Natives. Their works have been presented in Berlin at KW, State Studio, and HAU, and internationally at Cafe Oto (London), Ars Electronica (Linz), RIXC Open Fields (Riga) and Encuentro Tecnofeminista (Mexico City).
It is not obligatory, but if you have headphones, audio recorders, or any hydrophones, please bring them with you. This is an outdoor workshop, therefore choose your shoes and clothes accordingly.
