CorrelAidX Stuttgart talk: „Modeling the Covid-19 pandemic – How we estimate undetected cases for the Dunkelzifferradar dashboard"

CorrelAidX Stuttgart cordially invites you to its latest talk: „Modelling the Covid-19 pandemic – How we estimate undetected cases for the Dunkelzifferradar dashboard".

The CorrelAidX local chapter Stuttgart hosts an insightful and highly up-to-date talk by Christian Paul, a Data Scientist from Stuttgart who was part of the #WirVsVirus hackathon of the German Federal Government back in 2020.

To this day, the Covid-19 pandemic has a stranglehold over the world. In Germany and many other countries, extensive testing has become a key tool while vaccinations are slowly ramping up. Yet, we still do not know the exact number of those infected – many cases remain undetected, because not all people display symptoms of the disease. The so-called dark figure is assumed to be quite high, but how do we know? One way is to estimate this figure based on epidemiological and virological research. This is exactly what Christian Paul and a team of Data Scientists did in spring 2020 as participants of the #WirVsVirus hackathon. They built an online dashboard displaying estimates of undetected cases – so the public gets a more accurate picture of the pandemic. In our talk, Christian gives insights into how they built the model, the data pipeline for the dashboard – and the challenges they faced along the way.
