EUscreen symposium - Reimagining the Future of Data Flows: A European Digital Public Space

🟢JOIN US FOR THIS YEAR'S ANNUAL EUSCREEN SYMPOSIUM ON 4 AND 5 DECEMBER IN ATHENS, GREECE!🟢

This year’s symposium is co-hosted by EUscreen and the Archive of the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation, ERT Archive.

The act of promoting data sharing among cultural and creative industries serves as a catalyst for stimulating collaboration and unearthing novel business opportunities. Notably, the European Commission and member states are making substantial investments in public digital infrastructure and regulatory frameworks, with the primary goal of facilitating and augmenting the seamless flow of data between various economic sectors.

Within this landscape, EUscreen plays a pivotal role as an integral component of the Data Space for Cultural Heritage, operated by the Europeana Foundation. EUscreen is actively engaged in fortifying its connections with other essential Data Spaces, encompassing Media, Tourism, and the European Open Science Cloud. This year’s symposium will critically examine the collaborative potential in effectuating a swift and efficient exchange of data across the geographical expanse of Europe. It seeks to highlight opportunities in seamless data exchange across sectors and unravel the potential of a more cohesive, data-rich European future.

🟢FROM 'DATA ISLANDS' TO A UNIFIED INFRASTRUCTURE🟢

Data frequently remains confined within its respective domains, resulting in isolated ‘data islands’. The concept of common European Data Spaces emerges as a solution poised to transcend these limitations. By establishing a unified foundational infrastructure, European Data Spaces aspire to not only facilitate but also enhance the seamless exchange of data across these fragmented landscapes.

One particular realm that stands to benefit significantly from improved data sharing is the cultural and creative industries. Encouraging collaborative endeavours and fostering a fertile ground for innovative business prospects, the convergence of data within these sectors can spark new waves of synergy. The potential ramifications extend beyond, encompassing diverse sectors including cultural heritage, media, tourism, and science.

Cultural heritage institutions, driven by a mission that extends beyond traditional cultural goals, are increasingly embracing a broader role in society, moving their focus on communities and societal objectives. This transformative shift aligns with the vision of a digital public space wherein the internet is reconceptualised as a shared societal realm rather than a mere marketplace. Across Europe, cultural heritage institutions are actively contributing to the construction of this digital public space. Their initiatives not only uphold the preservation of cultural heritage but also catalyse the generation of new data flows.
