Meryem's Ballad: The Odyssey of a Guest-Worker
After its premiere at Deutsche Oper Berlin (Tischlerei) in 2023, Meryem’s Ballad returns in a newly developed version.
Nov 7 & 8, 2025 · 20:00 · ausland, Berlin
Set in 1970s West Germany, the piece reimagines Wagner’s Flying Dutchman through the meeting of two women on the factory floor: Meryem, a Turkish guest worker, and Senta, an opera heroine in a new reality.
Blending live music, spoken word, and layered visuals (animation, archival material, AI-generated imagery), Meryem’s Ballad traces migration, labor, and solidarity, reclaiming women’s voices from the margins of opera and history.
Languages: Turkish, German with English & German surtitles.
