Why AI won't solve the media crisis. A conversation with Tav Klitgaard and Prof. Wiebke Loosen

Many media organisations view artificial intelligence as the answer to an industry under pressure: producing content faster, working more efficiently, cutting costs, and reaching new audiences. But can AI really solve the challenges facing journalism today?

At this Publix Thursday, in cooperation with the Media Innovation Center Babelsberg (MIZ), Tav Klitgaard, CEO of the Danish media house Zetland, journalism researcher Prof. Wiebke Loosen of the Hans Bredow Institute, and Publix director Maria Exner discuss the responsible use of AI in journalism.

Zetland is one of the most compelling examples of digital journalism in Europe. It places a particular focus on community and asks how media organisations can test new technologies without losing sight of their editorial values. Wiebke Loosen adds a research-based perspective: how do digital technologies and automation change journalistic roles and editorial organisations? The evening connects ideas that Maria Exner presented at this year's re:publica conference with concrete experience from journalistic and academic practice, pointing to constructive approaches at the intersection of journalism, technology, research, and regulation.

The Media Innovation Center Babelsberg (MIZ) is the hub for innovation in media and journalism in Berlin and Brandenburg. As an institution of the Berlin-Brandenburg media authority (mabb), it supports new solutions at the intersection of media and technology, ensures that these innovations find their way into newsrooms and media organisations across the region, and encourages exchange about the opportunities and risks of new technologies for journalism and the media industry.

The conversation takes place in English.
