R Dev Day @ SIP 2025

About

R Dev Day @ SIP 2025 is an open, collaborative event for people interested in contributing to the code and documentation of base R, or to infrastructure that supports such contribution. Both new and experienced contributors are welcome!

This is a satellite event to Shiny in Production, which takes place in Newcastle, UK, with workshops in the afternoon on Wednesday 8 October and a day of presentations on Thursday 9 October. After completing registration for the dev day, the displayed success message will include a discount code you can use to get a 20% discount off tickets to Shiny in Production. Make a note of the code! Super early bird tickets for SIP 2025 are available till Monday 6 January.

Registration for both events will remain open until Wednesday 24 September.

Planned schedule

14:00 - 17:30 Tuesday 7 October - Kick-off session
09:00 - 12:30 Wednesday 8 October - Continued collaboration

Participants are expected to attend both sessions - if you can only attend part, you may register, but please accept that we may not have capacity to get you integrated with ongoing work or set up on a new task.

Thanks to Jumping Rivers (organizers of Shiny in Production) refreshments are provided in both sessions, along with lunch on the Wednesday.

Activities

Since this is a satellite to Shiny in Production, one aspect we plan to work on is improving the dashboard used to monitor translation work, see the open issues. But we will also suggest a range of other activities that people can work on if they wish, e.g. translating the English messages (errors and warnings) in R to other languages, debugging or proposing fixes for code bugs, or working on improvements to documentation. In the run up to the event, we will create issues for these tasks on the r-dev-day GitHub repo, where you can find issues prepared for previous events (some may be rolled over to this event!).
