Working on the MaRC3 Compute Cluster
Dear current and future MaRC3 users,
As the main provider of High Performance Computing (HPC) infrastructure at the University of Marburg, we are pleased to invite you to a combined event dedicated to efficient and responsible use of the MaRC3 cluster.
Part 1: Cluster Introduction and HPC User Meeting
09:00–10:30
This introductory session is aimed at new MaRC3 users and those considering HPC use in their future projects.
We will cover the cluster’s hardware configuration, software environment, and the fundamentals of job submission and resource management. While this information is available in the cluster documentation, the on-site format offers the opportunity for direct discussion and exchange among users.
For those unable to attend in person, the presentation materials will be made available on the MaRC3 documentation page. Future Cluster Introductions will alternate between online and on-site events once per semester.
Part 2: Workshop: Secure Processing of Sensitive Data on HPC Systems
10:45–13:00
Handling sensitive or personally identifiable data in research—especially in medicine, psychology, and related disciplines—requires particular care when using shared HPC infrastructure.
This hands-on workshop introduces practical workflows for securely processing such data on the MaRC3 cluster. Participants will learn how to:
- prepare and encrypt data locally before uploading to the cluster,
- manage access rights and storage locations appropriately,
- run computations on reserved nodes using a secure job template, and
- automatically re-encrypt and clean up results after processing.
The workflow presented is lightweight, platform-agnostic, and suitable for researchers with little prior experience in HPC or data protection. The focus lies on practical, reproducible habits for responsible computing in sensitive data contexts.
Both workshops can be attended independently or in conjunction. You need to book tickets separately for each part you want to attend.
Successful completion of both courses is a requirement for working on the MaRC3 infrastructure with any sensitive (personal) data.
Please bring your own laptops to follow along.
