The Alkestiade
Ancient Greece, long before its golden age. People recognize their destiny in myths and oracles, symbols and prophecies. The young princess Alcestis does not want to resign herself to the prospect of a predictable life as a wife and mother. But then the noble Admetus succeeds in passing an impossible test and wins her as his wife in a competition. A god must have helped him. Is there a higher will at work behind this union? On the day of the wedding, three lowly shepherds appear. One of them is the god Apollo in human form. But no one can tell which one.
Through its archaic story of rebellion and sacrifice, submission and revenge, The ALCESTIAD poses perennial questions about a struggling, meaning-seeking humanity.
