Titled “Silent Sojourns”, the project delves into the world of Chan Hau Chun’s meticulous five-year exploration of a partitioned rooms building. Through her lens, we wander through the corridors, rooms, staircases, rooftops, and various liminal spaces between public and private. The changes in shooting distance and angles not only reflect the evolving relationship between the filmed and the filmmaker, but also the unwavering spirit of each individual within. How did the filmmaker balance and decide between curiosity, detachment, observation, engagement and intervention? Chan’s quest for a definition of home has been reflected in her artistic journey, spanning from her tracing of family’s history in early years to documenting the lives of the homeless, and now focusing on the residents of partitioned flats. In this event, we will invite Chan to share her creative process and introspection, while juxtaposing her familiar documentary narrative with fragmentary stories at the exhibition.
