Source of Faith
The early 17th century marks one of the most exciting turning points in the history of music. As the dawn of the Baroque era broke, new genres such as opera, oratorio, concerto and sonata emerged from the Renaissance’s focus on the individual and its humanism. The human being, with all their passions, emotions, and light and dark sides, took centre stage.
Italy was ‘the place to be’. Whereas Franco-Flemish composers had once been the main developers of the art of the madrigal in Italy, the modern Italian style now spread throughout Europe.
Johann Hermann Schein (1586–1630), the most significant Thomaskantor in Leipzig before Johann Sebastian Bach, was also inspired by this trend. He composed madrigals in the Italian style but in the German language, publishing them in 1623 in his ‘Israelsbrünnlein’. The inexhaustible ‘fountain’ of the Old Testament served as his inspiration.
Strict German polyphony meets the expressive word-painting of the Italian madrigal. The result is the most important German motet collection of the 17th century.
For this project, Benno Schachtner (alto) has assembled a select group of singers and instrumentalists, including Miriam Feuersinger (soprano), Catalina Bertucci (soprano), Daniel Schreiber (tenor) and Lisandro Abadie (bass), alongside Dr Michael Wersin.
