Soli Deo Gloria, Glory to God alone – this is how Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750) signed many of his scores, both secular and sacred. Some refer to him as the Fifth Evangelist, such is the strength with which his deep faith is reflected in his life and work. Yet despite all his longing for the hereafter and his constant reference to a future, better world with God, Bach was also a joyful, loving, down-to-earth person who enjoyed eating and drinking, laughed and cried sincerely, and, when he felt it necessary, could argue passionately.
To many of his contemporaries, his music was even considered too sensual, too emotional.
Towards the end of his life, Bach condensed various earlier compositions into the Mass in B minor (BWV 232), the culmination of his creative output. He, who was orphaned at the age of nine, lost his beloved first wife, eleven of his twenty children and several siblings, finds in his works something that celebrates life and points beyond death.
Begun in 1733 and completed in 1749, the Missa tota unites Bach’s entire musical cosmos and has since been regarded as one of the greatest masterpieces of music. Four major movements comprising a total of 18 choral movements and nine arias, a wide variety of musical forms, timbres and modes of expression, and an expansion of the choral texture from five to eight voices ensure constant variety and crescendo. Since 2015, the Mass in B minor has been part of the UNESCO Memory of the World Register.
