De-biasing digital cultural heritage collections

The DE-BIAS project is dedicated to detecting and contextualising the use of harmful language in cultural heritage collections aggregated in Europeana.eu, while supporting cultural heritage professionals to address bias in the collections they work with.

This training event, will provide participants with the opportunity to learn more about the project’s activities and findings so far and to actively engage with some of the models and approaches the project applies in detecting and categorising bias and in deciding which actions to take. Based on examples currently available on Europeana.eu, the group will first learn about and discuss different types of bias that can occur, the concepts behind these biases, and strategies and frameworks to assess the urgency and priority of mitigation once biases have been detected. In breakout groups, the participants will then dive deeper into the identification of bias using selected examples, before applying one of the DE-BIAS project’s models to evaluate the detected biases as a basis for potential next steps.
The event will be concluded by an introduction of the DE-BIAS tool and vocabulary, which are currently under development. In the further course of the project, both will be made available for any aggregator and cultural heritage institution to integrate with their own data processes and workflows.

Next to gaining an understanding of the event’s topics themselves, participants will be presented with possible approaches and various models to run similar training activities in their own organisations and networks. For the interactive parts of this event, participants should bring their own laptop/devices.
