Workshop: Agentic Work with University LLMs

This workshop is a hands-on introduction to connecting local and open harnesses such as opencode or hermes to Freiburg’s university LLMs via the OpenWebUI API. Doing so allows users to employ the models for agentic work, i.e., using tool calling, access to local files, loops and skills to accomplish a given goal. If cautiously and strategically applied, agentic work with university models can expand one’s capabilities in research, teaching, and administration. Possible use cases include managing one’s files or one’s workflow (e.g., finding and collecting specific information across multiple files, renaming PDF files in a uniform way), conducting text or data analysis including visualizations, and creating dashboards, websites, apps, and tools.
Unlike commercial agentic tools such as Claude Code or OpenAI Codex, university LLMs allow you to work with sensitive data more safely, provided the harness is configured to use only the university endpoint and data protection rules are followed.
In the workshop, participants learn to install open harnesses, connect them to the university LLMs and use them for agentic work, ideally creating first prototypes of websites/applications by the end of the workshop.
Prerequisites: Bring your own laptop (Windows/Mac/Linux) and make sure you have the right to install programs. In order to fully benefit from the workshop, a university ID (Rechenzentrums-ID) and access to eduroam is needed. Remote participants off-campus need to have access to the university network via VPN to use the LLMs. If you do not have a university ID yet, please tick the box ‘I don’t have a University ID’ during registration.
This is a hybrid event. Please register at https://pretix.eu/achim-rabus/agentic-llms-2026/ (registration closes on 28 October, 12:00). Due to limited space, on-site places are limited and will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. If the on-site places are sold out, please put yourself on the waiting list via the “Waiting list” link in the shop and register for online participation at the same time — if a place frees up, you will be notified automatically.
