Songs of Light

Choral Concert with canta:re, Classical Lesbians, and Berliner Transemble

The classical queer chor canta:re and Berliner Transemble—a trans* choir without fixed vocal sections—present the results of their joint choral workshop. In addition to individual performances, the ensembles will perform several works together, and the Classical Lesbians will showcase selected pieces from their 30th-anniversary concert.

The Program
The repertoire spans from the Renaissance to the present day, including excursions into the world of Pop. Featured composers include Mascha Bartsch and Lucia Birzer, as well as the trans composer and performer Lyra Pramuk.

The Project
At the heart of the joint workshop is the challenge of uniting very different vocal requirements and artistic approaches into a single collective sound. Questions regarding instrumentation, voice distribution, and switching between vocal sections are being reimagined and tested. This process demands openness, a spirit of experimentation, and flexibility from both conductors and singers:

  • Which works are suited for this unique collaboration?
  • How can voices be assigned beyond traditional classifications?
  • Who can—and wants to—switch vocal sections for a specific piece, and what new tonal colors emerge as a result?

This is a musical experiment that doesn't just discuss queer diversity but practices it and makes it audible!

With the kind support of the Chorverband Berlin (Berlin Choral Association).
