An almost incomprehensible musical melange of Ethio Jazz, Afro Funk, Oriental, Dub and Psychedelic Rock: Black Flower from Brussels are a unique band that has virtually gone through the roof in recent years. Saxophonist Nathan Daems is the mastermind of the Belgians, he is both geographically and musically well-traveled and accordingly full of inspirations - and he now brings them to the band.
"Brilliant" is what Gilles Peterson called the sound of Black Flower, and the quintet collected similar adjectives for their albums. The current CD "Magma" expands the musical cosmos in the direction of Balkan beats. Black Flower work with dubby reverbs and the most diverse musical influences - an equally experimental and wonderfully organic journey through space and time.
Black Flower make hypnotic ethio dub jazz: it sounds like a threesome with John Zorn, Fela Kuti and Mulatu Astatke.
