"I don't like the word jazz. It scares away people who might be my listeners," says trumpeter Theo Croker. His music has nothing to do with pop ballads and gentle brush drums, but jazz can be so much more than that. And there is surely no one more suitable than the visionary instrumentalist Theo Croker to prove it. He belongs to the cohort of young African American jazz musicians who transport the spiritual approach, Afrofuturism, and the critical, socio-political consciousness of the 1960s into the present.
His music videos are reminiscent of action films and spaceships, yet the themes of the songs get to the heart of the matter. During the global isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Florida-born musician also chose personal retreat. Reflecting on a life at a standstill was his musical endeavor—resulting in two albums about his African heritage and his identity as a Black man.
Only a few months after his successful album "BLK2LIFE // A Future Past," he released the second part of his musical exploration of the history, present, and future of Black music culture in the USA with "Love Quantum" in June 2022. "Also a homage to all the different levels of love," Theo Croker calls his new album: "It's about how powerful this energy is for us as humans." Musically, he finds a perfect mix of gospel, blues, jazz, soul, and funk.
The GRAMMY-nominated trumpeter, producer, and composer Theo Croker is a storyteller who speaks through his trumpet—a creative who transcends boundaries and makes himself heard through music.
