At first hearing, his playing seems unspectacular, but soon it becomes clear what an inspired and inspiring musician this Matthew Halsall is: The trumpeter from Manchester plays as unexcited as he is soulful - that is perhaps the apt description of his music. Halsall carries on the spiritual jazz of an Alice Coltrane or a Pharaoh Sanders.
Of course, he draws inspiration from contemporary British jazz and incorporates gentle electronic and world music influences. The unusual instrumentation on his latest album "Salute To The Sun" with flute and harp contributes to the unique sound of his band: It sounds equally dreamy and free-spirited, retro and innovative. No wonder Chris May in All About Jazz called this CD a "balm for the soul."
Matthew Halsall's music is like a quietly glowing star of intangible beauty in a troubled universe.
