"This woman is truly a phenomenon" - the specialist magazine JazzThing was astonished, and the Süddeutsche added: "Here are four highly talented people making music that recognizably means a lot to them." Various juries also recognized this and awarded the Berlin quartet the Burghausen Jazz Prize and the Munich Jazz Prize.
The woman referred to at the beginning is the Ukrainian singer Viktoria Leléka - and the concept of her band is as remarkable as it is unusual: Leléka transforms folk songs from Viktoria's homeland into jazz. The result is very complex: delicate melodies meet grooving rhythms, dramatic harmonies flow into improvised passages, and above them floats the voice like a stork - which is exactly the German word for Leléka: on top of that, the Ukrainian folk symbol for love and happiness.
Leléka prove that folk jazz can be as graceful as it is groovy and exciting.
