KINO KADDISH: The Commissar
KINO KADDISH: The Commissar is a half-day event on Sunday, 19 April 2026 at Museum Berlin-Karlshorst, Zwieseler Str. 4, 10318 Berlin, combining a guided tour of the historic site, onsite catering, two presentations, a film screening, and a concluding Q&A. Set in Berdychiv during the Civil War, Aleksandr Askoldov’s The Commissar (Комиссар, USSR 1967/1987) was banned for almost two decades and remains a key film for thinking about Soviet censorship, Jewish life, violence, motherhood, and memory. Dr. Irina Scherbakowa will speak from her work on Stalinism, oral history, and Soviet remembrance culture, while Prof. Dr. Viktoriya Sukovata will present research on the film’s production history, censorship, and the representation of Jewish experience in Soviet cinema. Held at the site of Germany’s 1945 surrender, the event brings film history and historical place into direct conversation.
