As part of the Day of Architecture in Saxony-Anhalt, Burckhardt Architektur will offer guided tours of the extension building of the Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics in Halle (Saale), designed and realised by Burckhardt Architektur, on 27 June 2026.

The Max Planck Society is one of the world’s leading research organisations. For decades, its institutes have stood for excellence in research across the natural sciences, social sciences and humanities. The Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics in Halle (Saale) is dedicated to fundamental research in materials science and solid-state physics, focusing in particular on the surfaces and interfaces of semiconductors, insulators and metals.

Founded in 1992, it was the first Max Planck Institute established in the new federal states of Germany after reunification. The extension building, approved in 2019, provides additional laboratories, modern office spaces and a large cleanroom, creating optimal conditions for future research projects.

The tours will be led alternately in German and English by architect Golnar Isrusch. Visitors will gain insights into the new research building as well as the planning, technical and architectural challenges involved in designing a highly complex laboratory and research facility. The tours will be accompanied by Dr Dirk Sander.

Each tour is limited to approximately 50 minutes and a maximum of 10 participants. Prior registration is required. If a tour is already fully booked, it is possible to join the waiting list. In the event of a cancellation, people on the waiting list will be notified automatically.
