The Wikimedia Hackathon is organized by the Wikimedia Foundation in collaboration with Wikimedia Italia (WMIT) and is taking place in-person in Milan, Italy, from May 1 - 3, 2026. Registration for the 2026 Wikimedia Hackathon will open in January 2026. A separate Pretix registration document will be used for registrations.

Scholarship and Staff Sponsorship applications
Scholarship will cover airfare, accommodations (4 nights), limited medical insurance for scholars residing outside of Italy, all meals for the duration of the event. In addition, a stipend will be provided to to cover the costs of visa application fees (if relevant), ground transportation, and per diem on travel days. The scholarship will not cover insurance for personal possessions or vaccinations.

Timelines
All applications will be reviewed by a Scholarship and Sponsorship Committees, composed of representatives from the Wikimedia Foundation and Wikimedia Italia. All applicants will be notified of the Committee’s decision by mid-December 2025. Applicants who have been selected to receive a scholarship will need to register for the 2026 Wikimedia Hackathon within two weeks of their notification of acceptance.

Selection criteria
* Previous engagement in technical activities within the Wikimedia movement
* Clear plan for contributing to the event, which could include a well-developed project
* The selection committee will seek a balance of skill sets and to ensure a diversity of participants
